2018 "Build a Better Mousetrap" Awards presented to 18 Cape & Islands Small Business Owners selected by their respective Chambers of Commerce
SCORE's "Build a Better Mousetrap" Award honors companies that survive the critical first five years and appear to be headed for long-term success. All Chambers of Commerce on the Cape & Islands are invited to participate by selecting one of their member companies for recognition. In 2018 SCORE's "Build a Better Mousetrap" Awards go to 18 deserving companies. The winners, all listed below, received their awards at SCORE's annual awards breakfast, May 18th at the Old Yarmouth Inn.

Brewster Chamber of Commerce honors:
Marcia Galazzi - The Family Schools
Marcia Galazzi holds a Masters of Education in Human Development and is a Certified Family Life Educator. She founded The Family Schools 36 years ago based on her theory that all the power in early childhood education is decisions made in the family. She said “Support the family socially and the child will thrive. Family goals and education goals should be the same.”
The Family School has a staff of 32 during the school year and 90 in the summer when the Brewster Day Camp is in session; 700 students and their parents are served. The school’s non-profit foundation further serves these families with scholarships, camperships and microloans. In 2009, the school was honored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children as one of the top 10 schools in the United States offering this unique style of education.
Marcia gives back to the community as a member of the Nauset Rotary Club since 1989. She has also served on numerous boards and advisory committees including Academy of Performing Arts, the Orleans Water Quality Committee, Stony Brook Elementary School advisory committee, Children’s Cove, and Cape Cod Regional Technical High School Early Childhood Education Advisory Committee.
Under Marcia’s leadership, The Family Schools is an example of a successful and thriving business providing good jobs and long term economic stability. Her next step in the business was implementing a succession plan that will ensure the business’ continued success for another 36 years and allow her to semi-retire. In February 2018, Marcia’s daughter Melissa “Misa” Galazzi became the CEO of The Family Schools.
Cape Cod is richer thanks to Marcia’s excellence in business and community service.
Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce honors:
James Barnes, Director of Social Enterprise, Tracey Fraser, Farm Manager - Cape Abilities Farm
The evolution of this mid-Cape farm has really advanced dramatically in the last five years – and is now a substantial, thriving farm. This innovative project serves to not only give meaningful employment to Cape Codders with disabilities, it also provides award-winning tomatoes, annual and perennial flowers and locally grown products to Cape residents. Their Farm-to-Table Market and Gallery at the farm located on Route 6A in Dennis features local products, supporting other entrepreneurs in the region and creating a wonderful destination for residents and visitors to the Cape.
The Cape Abilities Farm is also an active participant in supporting other causes – such as their “Meet Your Local Farmers” event held in March with the Cape & Islands Farm Bureau and Harwich Conservation Trust. They supported the Good Works Fund of the Hyannis Rotary Club by sponsoring a booth with farm products at the 2018 Rotary Home Show in Hyannis. They participated in the “Light It Up Blue” on World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2018, in collaboration with Cooke’s Seafood.
The fact that this farm is a non-profit entity does not exclude it from all issues and challenges that a for-profit company faces on a daily basis. However, their mission allows them to reinvest their profits into the services they provide, helping Cape Codders with housing, employment, socialization and healthcare. All this creates a better Cape Cod!

Chatham Chamber of Commerce honors:
Rebecca Segura - Chatham Cookware
Rebecca’s inspiration for her café was her Swedish grandmother who showed her that any time spent with friends or family over food was time well spent and something to be nurtured and cherished. The Chatham Cookware Café is a breakfast and lunch counter service style restaurant, open from May 1st through January 1st from 6:30am to 4:00pm daily in the Summer Season. They are going into their 18th season and have become part of the fabric of Main Street Chatham. They see the same faces for breakfast and then back again at lunch to grab sandwiches for their day at the beach or on the boat. In the morning it may be for a favorite breakfast sandwich made to order and served on Portuguese Rolls. In the afternoon, a favorite is the “Salty Llama”, a tarragon chicken salad house specialty. Rebecca’s favorite part of the day is behind the counter, greeting everyone as they come in, everyone is on a first name basis. Some customers even refer to the Cookware as “Rebecca’s”, making it feel like it is really an extension of her own kitchen, which in essence it is. Bringing joy to our customers through food and a smile is what sets us apart from the rest.
Dennis Chamber of Commerce honors:

DCC is located directly on the Cape Cod Rail Trail and rent a variety of comfort bikes, hybrids, kid's bikes, trailers, and tag-a-longs for the whole family. A full service bicycle shop for all cycling needs, they pride themselves on friendly, competent service.
Eastham Chamber of Commerce honors:
Sanette Groenewald - Karoo Restaurant
Sanette Groenewald was born and raised in the Little Karoo in South Africa. Life in the Karoo is simple, down to earth and unpretentious, full of friendly people. This is the principle that Karoo Restaurant was built on and is reflected in the food she serves and the people on her staff that help prepare and serve it. It all started in 2002 when Sanette opened her first restaurant in the United States. Karoo Kafe opened with the idea of introducing her food from home to Cape Coders.
Grabbing a wonderful opportunity in 2013 Karoo Restaurant in Eastham was born. Believing in the motto that “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” Sanette knew this was the right move to make because the thought of this project petrified her! Going from a 19 seat, mostly to-go Kafe to a full serve 120 seat restaurant was a huge leap. Luckily the locals and tourists were ready for something different and now the restaurant is ready to open for their 6th season. Karoo is growing every year and looking forward to being a part of the community for many more years.
Falmouth Chamber of Commerce honors:
Jim Preisig - JPAnalytics, LLC

JPAnalytics is a dynamic small business developing and defining the future in underwater acoustic communications and array processing. JPAnalytics works both alone and with technology development and system integration partners to develop underwater acoustic array processing and acoustic communications algorithms and systems for challenging applications. Our products currently in prototype development extend the capabilities of our customers in the Department of Defense and underwater technology industries to enable safe, secure and reliable operation in dynamic and hostile environments. JPAnalytics is motivated by real-world applications and our results are derived from a combination of data, theory and analysis. JPAnalytics was founded in September 2013 and is located in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
The company founder, Dr. James Preisig, has for over 25 years been a leader in the field of high frequency ocean acoustics and adaptive signal processing for ocean applications. He was a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) until he retired in 2014 to devote himself full-time to JPAnalytics. He has developed and taught graduate level courses at MIT and Northeastern University and professional continuing education courses. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and has organized and led multiple national and international forums on challenges and research in high frequency acoustics and underwater acoustic communications.
Dr. Preisig received his Bachelors of Science degree in electrical engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1980 and served on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard until August 1985. He received his Master’s degree from the MIT in 1988, and his Doctorate in electrical and ocean engineering from the MIT/ WHOI Joint Program in 1992. He and his wife Anne live in Falmouth and have two children, Clara and Eric.
Harwich Chamber of Commerce honors:
Jeff Gomes & Tad Peavey - Brax Landing Restaurant
Owners Jeff Gomes and Tad Peavey became the new owners of Brax Landing in 2003 and have continued a tradition Gomes and his former partner Ron Leidner started – a Thanksgiving tradition marking its 25th year serving the community of Harwich. Brax Landing’s free Thanksgiving Dinner has grown exponentially over the years. In recent years, they have served 800 turkey dinners at no charge to seniors, young families just starting out, people who have nowhere to go for the holiday, and those who cannot afford to cook their own holiday dinner.
Gomes and Peavey both grew up in Harwich, and the community has been good to them as their business has grown, so the restaurateurs want to give back. It’s a collective team that comes together every year when the Brax staff and their families prepare the meal, wash the dishes, and spend time with the guests during the three seatings. The vendors and volunteers from the community join them in coming together to ensure that no one is alone for Thanksgiving. That even includes delivering to homebound seniors and the Harwich Police Department helping with transportation.
In addition to spearheading this annual Thanksgiving tradition, Brax Landing supports many community organizations and events – everything from charity raffles to Little League teams. Brax Landing is open year-round for lunch and dinner and remains a local favorite, whether you’re craving the award-winning lobster roll, fresh burger, or local seafood. Brax Landing is the kind of place where people return year after year – and some for generations. This picturesque waterfront restaurant delights locals and visitors alike!
Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce honors:
Robbin Orbison - Cape Space
CapeSpace is a coworking center in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Coworking is a relatively new term used to describe a situation where people are working independently but sharing space and resources. CapeSpace offers fully furnished private offices, conference rooms and an open business lounge along with business services on flexible terms. It also offers “virtual offices” which are enhanced mailing addresses with many advantages over PO Boxes or other rentable addresses.
CapeSpace offers all the convenience and professional image of class A office space on an as-needed basis and at a much lower cost. Offices and meeting rooms can be rented on an hourly or daily basis, and business lounge usage works much like a gym, where clients pay a monthly membership fee to drop in and use the space when they want to.
Business services include high speed internet from OpenCape, a gourmet coffee bar, copy/print/scan/fax equipment, lockers, large monitors, shredders, mobile white boards, phone booths, reception/concierge services, and administrative assistance.
Robbin Orbison is a career commercial real estate development professional from the financial side of the business, whose most recent industry position was Chief Financial Officer for Silverstein Properties, the global developer that owns and is rebuilding the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. In 2012, Silverstein Properties entered the shared workspace arena with a line of serviced executive suites that operates under the brand name Silver Suites. It was through her work on Silver Suites that Robbin gained experience in and developed a passion for the shared workspace business.
Robbin relocated to the Cape in 2014 where she began working on the concept for CapeSpace, which opened in the summer of 2016. Robbin has held senior level positions with other global developers including The Related Companies and Trammel Crow. She holds an MBA from Simmons College, has served on the faculty of New York University’s Schack Real Estate Institute, serves on the boards of the Cape Cod Technology Council, the Workspace Association of New York, and will be inducted to the board of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce in June. She lives in East Sandwich with her husband, Michael Orbison, a general business attorney, and a 20-pound Maine Coon cat named Wilson.
Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce honors:
Jacalyn Kane - My Vineyard Elopement & Weddings
Jacalyn Kane brings over 20 years of experience, style and passion to My Vineyard Elopement & Weddings. Ms. Kane has merged her love of the Island with her unique talents and expertise to create first-class elopements. Jacalyn is an ordained minister (non-denominational) with a background in women's holistic health, concierge services, and non-profit concert events. Her passion for sharing the natural beauty of the Island with her clients and for ceremonies that honor their love inspired her to create My Vineyard Elopement & Weddings. Marrying her love of the island with her passion for creating simply elegant events & ceremonies that celebrate the love between two people comes naturally to Ms. Kane.
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce honors:
Jamie Schuh - Bagel Haven
Jamie opened Bagel Haven in the spring of 2013. Since then, Bagel Haven has been compared with “Cheers”: a place where everyone knows your name. Jamie and her staff try to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, to make everyone who visits feel comfortable and at home at Bagel Haven. If you go enough times, Jamie is going to recognize and remember you. If it’s your first visit, she is still going to treat you like a neighbor and friend. Kindness goes a long way for small businesses in Mashpee.
Jamie has found several ways to share Bagel Haven’s success with her community. Going back to her career roots in the non-profit arena, Jamie hires dishwashers and part-time help through CapeAbilities—a local non-profit organization that assists and empowers people with disabilities. In addition to hiring individuals of all abilities, Jamie also gives to local organizations. If a local group—such as the police, fire, scouts, or Mashpee school sports teams—asks for help with a fundraiser, Jamie will contribute what she can. She also supports the Mashpee Chamber’s Season of Illumination by donating gifts and participating in the Breakfast with Mrs. Claus scavenger hunt and dining for a cause.
Jamie encourages her patrons to support local groups by inviting people, especially young kids, to sell raffle tickets out front of the shop. “Because we’re small, it’s hard for people to get past without being noticed,” Jamie says.
Many local businesses support local fundraisers, but another aspect of Bagel Haven makes it stand out among the rest. Inside Bagel Haven, there is an “Artist of the Month” wall, dedicated to local artists and photographers. This began when a former employee of Jamie’s began replacing the mass-produced art that hung on the wall with her own one-of-a-kind works of art. This was the beginning of Bagel Haven’s relationship with local artists. There are no requirements, no judgements, and no conditions on having your artwork displayed on the wall. Everyone gets to feel at home at Bagel Haven, from the up and coming artists to the eager breakfast seekers.
Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce honors:
Patrick Ridge - Island Kitchen Restaurant
Remarkably, Chef / Owner Patrick Ridge of Island Kitchen began his cooking career at age 14, immediately drawn to the sense of community and camaraderie that exists within the kitchen. After receiving his formal training at the Culinary Institute of America, Chef Patrick went on to complete numerous apprenticeships at two and three Michelin-starred restaurants both in the US and abroad.
Previously Head Chef of Le Languedoc, he also oversaw the development of Pronto, a high-end store-to-table concept restaurant. Patrick has also worked as a private chef and was the driving force behind many high profile catered events on and off island. Patrick completed his MBA at prestigious Babson College where he was accepted into the highly ranked Entrepreneurship program.
“We have tried to steadily improve our offerings and physical space over the last five years as we support year-round and seasonal island patrons,” noted Ridge. “I am proud of the dedicated team we have built and look forward to serving everyone with an approachable menu and relaxed environment.”
Ridge has expanded his popular mid-island eatery in the past few years to include a homemade ice cream bar—featuring delectable homemade donuts—and an in-demand rentable event space.
Orleans Chamber of Commerce honors:
Carol Hayward - Talking Threads Custom Embroidery
Talking Threads was established in 1990 by previous owners and purchased by current owner, Carol Hayward, in 2002. Carol moved it from its store front location on Brackett Road in North Eastham, to her home at 35 Portanimicut Road in 2009. She expanded the business since purchasing it to include 2 additional machines and a heat press has hired 2 part time employees. Not having any background in business, she continually strives to learn new and better ways to run the business and to be successful.
Talking Threads provides embroidery, silk screening, heat transfers and promotional products. They work with many of local businesses, especially people involved in the trades, and restaurants. They have a large selection of both warm and cold weather garments and they love working with customers to help brand their businesses, and keep them looking professional.
Carol finds most of her customers through local networking and has belonged to local chambers of commerce, both Eastham and Orleans since buying the business. She joined a local BNI chapter during her first year in business. She also belongs to the Home Builders and Remodelers of Cape Cod.
She loves showing off her workspace to customers and they're always amazed that a workshop such as this exists in Orleans.
Provincetown Chamber of Commerce honors:
John Braden - WOMR
In 1976 a small band of radio visionaries was inspired to create a community radio station in Provincetown. It took several years to raise awareness, gather funding, and negotiate the complicated permitting process (both national and local). The dream was eventually realized when WOMR went on the air in 1982 with 1000 watts at a frequency of 91.9 FM.
In 1995, WOMR moved to 92.1 FM, raising power to 6000 watts to reach a much wider audience on Cape Cod and Boston’s south shore, eventually installing a second transmitter—WFMR 91.3 FM to improve the signal from Orleans to Hyannis.
John Braden began volunteering at the station in 1991, and since then has been a music DJ, spoken-word producer, and chief operator, serving on both the ops team and the board of directors. In 2006 he was promoted to operations manager and in 2012 he became the station’s executive director.
Sandwich Chamber of Commerce honors:
Theresa Martens - Snow Goose Shop
The Snow Goose Shops of Cape Cod is a unique shopping experience focused on locally created and Cape inspired products. Theresa Martens took over the shop in 2014 with plans to reinvent the well-known store with more local products. The Cape Cod community has embraced the new Snow Goose Shop and we opened a second location in Harwich in 2017. The Snow Goose Shop continues to evolve giving our customers the most unique shopping experience. Our Sandwich location moved to 23 Jarves Street for 2018 and our online store has made it possible for our customers from around the globe to buy our Cape Cod products. We look forward to bringing you the very best Cape Cod made and Cape Cod inspired products for years to come.

Diane and Billy Costa opened the Sweet Escape Ice Cream on the Friday of July 4th weekend 2006. Their homemade ice cream became an overnight success and lines were (and still are) out the door each night in the summer. After a successful summer, they decide to expand and on the Friday of July 4th weekend 2007, they opened Savory on the Cape, in the adjoining space. With delicious stone fired pizza, panini’s, fresh baked pastries and the homemade ice cream that started it all, Savory and the Sweet Escape are the hearth and soul of Truro. Diane and Billy are committed to supporting their community through local charities and source local foods, use local suppliers and service companies as well as employing 12 people year round and over 30 in the summer.
Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce honors:
Siobhan Galvin Doane - Salt
Salt is the project of Wellfleet native Siobhan Galvin Doane. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from UC Berkley and a Master’s in teaching English Language Learners. After living and working in Seattle and Portland Maine, she and her husband decided to move back to Wellfleet because they both felt it was where they wanted to spend their lives, and the best place for her to open a store. It had been her dream for several years to open and run her own women’s clothing store, as she has been a lover of fashion and style her entire life and knew that a store would be the best way to combine her interests with her experience of managing, marketing and working in a gallery.
Salt, a contemporary women’s clothing store, opened in May 2014 on Commercial Street in downtown Wellfleet. It aims to bring the feel of a big city boutique into the small town, while staying true to the community’s seaside roots. Salt offers a unique and fun shopping experience in a carefully curated space featuring clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Salt caters to the town’s special combination of locals and visitors, creating a style that is classic and modern with an effortless bohemian edge. After four successful years at Salt’s first location, Siobhan and her husband just purchased a building in Wellfleet at 25 Bank Street, where she will open Salt for its 5th year at its new location this April.
