Tony Shepley started Shepley Wood Products in 1978 with zero experience in the lumber and building materials industry, a used truck, $4,000, and an idea that there was a need for another lumber yard on Cape Cod.  Fast forward 40 years.  Tony has more than 160 employees at three locations (Hyannis, Wellfleet, and Nantucket) with more than 18 “Shepley Seniors” having more than 20 years tenure    How does he do it?  By investing – in his employees, customers, and the community.

Shepley supports its customers by providing product expertise in the form of knowledgeable sales staff, award-winning service, free educational opportunities for earning CSL credits, and sharing best practices. Through the Home Builders & Remodelers Assoc of CC, Shepley is able to work alongside other industry professionals with the common goal of making construction a sustainable and responsible industry that supports home ownership on Cape Cod via it’s blogs and numerous workshops such as Hi Performance & Net Zero Energy, Architects Earn 4 Credits, OSHA training, LBM Expo and Toolbox Talks.

When it comes to the community, “I view ‘civic rent’ as a social obligation that we should pay back to our community both personally and professionally,” says Tony. “Paying our civic rent is how we maintain our society and our quality of life by investing in the repairs, maintenance and the building up of the social systems around us.”  Shepley accomplishes this mission in a variety of ways via the Shepley Wide Open Charity Golf Event, The Shepley Charitable Giving Committee reviews and oversees all donation requests, focusing its support on health, human services and housing, such as the Cape and Islands United Way, Habitat for Humanity on Cape Cod, Housing Assistance Corporation, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands and Calmer Choice.  Shepley’s Employee Charitable Giving Program was formed to encourage our employees’ personally supporting the community, including giving one paid day off each year to volunteer, supporting the fundraising efforts of our children and grandchildren, as well as an employee match program.
